Deoband Community Wikimedia (abbreviated as DCW) is a recognized user-group affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation, with an aim to improve Wikipedia and its sister projects with knowledge and information related to but not limited to global Muslim academia, scholarship, history and culture, at a global level, in any language.

Established on 31 July 2021, DCW was recognised by the Affiliation Committee on 16 January 2022. It has introduced collaborative projects such as Deoband Yoruba Collaborative Project and DCW-K Editathon to sustain its growth and objectives. It hosts the DCW Conversation Hour once a month, and has firm activity plans for its growth and development.

Our mission and purpose

We align ourselves with the mission of Wikimedia Foundation to engage people collect and develop knowledge [with a thematic focus on global Muslim academia, history, clture, heritage, etcetera], under a free license or in the public domain and to disseminate it effectively. As an affiliate of the Foundation, we offer our members a recognised voice in the Wikimedia community.

Our purpose is to:

  • To help grow and promote the development of free knowledge through open source.
  • To increase public awareness and support for Wikimedia platforms and projects.
  • To support creation of Wikipedia spaces in Muslim minority institutions, aligned with our focus.

What we do

We support people and organisations in contributing to Wikipedia, Wikidata and other Wikimedia platforms through events, training and partnerships - contributing to our thematic foucs. We:

  • Train people and organisations to learn about and how to edit Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms
  • Support experienced editors to continue to grow and develop their contributions to Wikimedia platforms through networking and training
  • Organise workshops, edit-a-thons and events with our network of DCW Facilitators
  • Codesign programs and partnerships that address gaps and bias on Wikimedia platforms
  • Run and facilitate global conversations through DCW Conversation Hour
  • Train beginner graphic designers through our DCW Graphic Internship
  • Connect regional editors with the global editing community
  • Advocate for open access.
