AI, Hallucinations and Fact Checking

32nd DCW Conversation Hour
This Conversation Hour features Abbad Diraneyya, a Knowledge Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation and a long-time advocate for free knowledge and community empowerment. Abbad has been part of the Wikimedia movement since 2009, co-founding Wikimedia Levant and serving as its first chair, while also contributing extensively to Arabic Wikipedia and beyond. With experience spanning knowledge strategy, open education, and authorship of Creative Commons–licensed works, he has helped strengthen collaboration across communities and institutions within the movement.

In an age where artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping how information is produced and consumed, the challenges of AI hallucinations and fact-checking have become critical for Wikimedia’s mission of knowledge integrity. This session will explore how AI-generated content impacts our ecosystems of knowledge, the risks of misinformation, and the opportunities for fact-checking practices to evolve. Abbad will guide us through these intersections, helping us reflect on the movement’s role in ensuring reliability, trust, and accuracy in the era of AI.
